“This has been a long journey, especially after the floods,” said an enthusiastic Mary as we paid compliments to the crowded dining area at newly opened The Nook Caffe Restaurant in Jindalee this morning. Formerly known as the GardenWay Restaurant, Mary, George, Doug and the crew started from the ground up when they relocated to the Sinnamon Road site after the floods and have been fully operational for just over three weeks.
The open-planned and contemporarily designed eatery is filled with warmth from not only the sun shining through the large windows, but from the friendly and attentive staff. Despite not having a booking (and I recommend you make one if wanting to enjoy a weekend breakfast) we were quickly shown to a table on the deck. Timber features heavily and is complemented by simple design touches throughout.
With coffees ordered, our attentions turned to the mouth-watering breakfast menu. Canadian-born New Zealander, Owen Lacey is Executive Chef and with his team, has created a menu highlighting the ‘simple things done well’ philosophy of The Nook. With a gentle winter breeze blowing it is difficult to look past the hot breakfast with treats such as the Sweet corn fritter with Spanish chorizo sausage, avocado, grilled peppers and toasted sourdough, and ‘The Nook Breakfast’ boasting bacon, poached eggs, sausage, tomato, hash brown, mushroom and sourdough. There goes the diet!
It was only a short wait until our meals were served, which went by unnoticed while indulging in conversation. On appearances, both meals exceeded expectation – the golden fritter was striking against the rich-looking sausage and the fresh green of the avocado, while the bacon, eggs, sausage, tomato, and mushrooms were so beautifully arranged it seemed almost a shame to eat them. But that’s exactly what we did.
The fritter, which sat tall on the plate as opposed to flat like a pancake, was surprisingly light, and the corn was sweet at the bite and perfectly accompanied by the salty flavours of the Spanish sausage. Together with the avocado spread across the sourdough, this made for a satisfying start to the day. However, if there was one downside to this meal it was the grilled peppers, which were more of a cold relish than the red skins I had been looking forward to. Proper grilled peppers could have added colour and flavour to the meal, but these didn’t really add anything and seemed out-of-place on the plate.
The Nook Breakfast was a delight. Standouts on the plate were the poached eggs, which had been done to perfection with a runny yolk hardening around the edges, while the mushrooms were plump and flavoursome. With the bacon, tomato and a thick cut of sour dough, this could easily become a favourite.
“This has been a real challenge and we’ve worked really hard, so we hope people enjoy it,” Mary said. Well, we certainly did!
In time, the experience will extend from breakfast and lunch 7 days a week to include dinner, and the venue is also set to host live folk music on the first and third Monday of each month. With this part of the western suburbs a hive of activity, The Nook Caffe and Restaurant is a welcome addition.
