Fly me to the moon

I embrace any excuse to hit the road and the opportunity at a romantic getaway for two is one way to celebrate the international Day of Love. As Valentine’s Day falls on a Thursday this year some lovers are opting for a romantic long weekend away and good for them.

Valentine's Day GetawaysAccording to Australian Traveller magazine there are more than 100 romantic getaway locations in Australia and right at the top of its list is the Great Barrier Reef.

Stayz.com.au has a Top 10 of its own and ranks Victoria’s Daylesford at number one. The Daylesford region is renowned for spa resorts, secluded cottages and B&Bs making it an idyllic setting for couples searching for a bit of peace and quiet.

For me, Western Australia has many of the destinations that rate highly on my list of romantic spots in Australia. Winding through the karri trees in the south-west of WA is a uniquely romantic feeling, and Margaret River’s quiet country roads, surf, caves and wineries make it a wonderful spot to stop in on for a luxury getaway for two. But the bush, red rock and culturally beautiful Kimberley region in the state’s north is also something to consider. As one of the world’s last-remaining unspoilt frontiers, it is hard not to lose your heart to this ancient land.

Another romantic spot on my personal list of romantic getaways is New South Wales’ Hunter Valley. With a wine heritage going back many centuries and more than 80 wineries to stop in on, the Hunter Valley is a ‘must do’ for not just lovers, but lovers of wine. (Just get someone else to do the driving.)

Across the ditch, on New Zealand’s South Island the historic hamlet of Arrowtown is one of the most picturesque settlements in the country. Established in the mid-1800s during the height of the regional gold rush, this town is at its most romantic in April and May when the deciduous trees prepare for winter and are bursting with colour.

Be it the rugged and rustic, the pristine and tropical or the quaint and cosy Australia is not short on romantic locations, so get planning for a long weekend away and make this year’s Valentine’s Day extra special.
